This blog post shows the steps required to implement an async patch with SDDC Manager (5.2.0.0). Previously, you were able to download async patches using a CLI procedure, which I also wrote about. As of VCF 5.2.x a feature has been introduced that allows administrators to implement async patches through the SDDC Manager GUI.
An async patch has been made available for vCenter Update 8.0 U3d (VMSA-2024-0019.2).
You will first need to download the async patch. For this, navigate to Lifecycle Management > Bundle Management > find the patch (version 1.1.1.1) and Click Download Now
You can easily implement the patches as you were used to. You can choose to integrate/replace the releases from the Bill-of-Materials and replace it with the downloaded async patches, versioned 1.1.1.1, as they can now be downloaded from Bundle Management.
Note that during a VCF Upgrade, you are also allowed to use the async patches easily.
These async patches can be found at the Workload Domain level, in the Available Updates section.
Click on Plan Patching
You can find an overview of the async patches at VMware Broadcom’s Knowledge Base article here.
In the next screen, you might need to wait for a minute or so, you will find the available async patches pop-up.
If nothing pops up, please refer to my blog post or VMware-Broadcom’s KB380402 article on this; you might have had some upgrades/implementations before, for which additional cleanup steps are required.
Select the application on the left, and the drop down button tells you which component version can also be used to install. These are the downloaded version 1.1.1.1 releases.
Click confirm and wait until the next screen shows up.
You can easily check which steps the patch plan is comprised of.
Select Configure Update and proceed as normal; this depends on the component.
